Anna Hergert Class and Trunk Show

A much anticipated weekend for the guild arrived with Anna Hergert teaching a design class on Saturday and Sunday and with an open-to-the-public trunk show on Saturday night.

The class was attended by guild members Jan, Shelley, Dorothy, Elaine, Colleen S., Audrey, Sharilyn, Jaynie, Joanne, Bonnie, Michele, Vera, and Brenda. Other class members came from the Moose Jaw area, Torquay, Yorkton, and Manitou in Manitoba.

Here are some photos.  What does the first one have to do with the class?  Not a thing!  It's just too darn cute to not include... Happy Hallowe'en.

There aren't any photos here of what students created, but if you come to the November guild meeting, I bet you'll see some at show-and-tell.

 

Our members who were in charge of publicity for Anna's trunk show did a super job and, consequently, there was a large group out for the show.  There were quilters, other artists, and the general public there to learn about the creative process.

 

Anna's truck show was organized, informative, and, most of all, inspiring.  I'm finding upholstery for my red chair tomorrow!

Guild Meeting - October 2nd, 2012

Don't forget that we are hosting a trunk show by Anna Hergert entitled "Choosing Creativity" on October 27th, 2012 at 7 p.m.  It's being held in the Upper Hall of Grace United Church.  Your guild membership entitles you to attend this event for free.  Invite your non-guild friends as the event is open to the public with the cost being $10 for non-guild members.

As well, Jaynie sent me great photos of the retreat and I will try get them posted.  They are giving me problems right now and I'm not sure why.  Probably any 12 year old on the street could solve the computer issue in minutes but at my age it takes longer!!

My sister found the following in a senior magazine.  I suspect it is fiction, but it's fun nonetheless.

 

Advice from a Singer Sewing Manual from 1949

 

Prepare yourself mentally for sewing.  Think about what you are going to do ... Never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically.  Good results are difficult when indifference predominates.  Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade.  When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.  When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible.  Put on a clean dress.  Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals.  Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on.  If you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home, and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing.

 





Guild's Going Again: September 4, 2012

 Oh, I love fall!  It's the new year for me rather than January 1st.  Activities get started again and, trust me, I've been yearning for motivation from your beautiful creations, ladies.  Above is a charity quilt that has been perfectly hand quilted by Vi.  Below are other cheerful charity quilts.

 And below is what $10 will get you!  This is a top that the guild will back and give to charity.  I could be wrong but I believe the top red one is for the Communithon and this one is for Family Place's Festival of Trees.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

 Vera always has good ideas and here's one of them.  She invented this summery handbag from a - can you guess? - from a placemat!

 and table runners.  Lydia always does such a good job of selecting perfect color combinations.

 These also show her expertise.

 Renee brought her forever-projecct which I couldn't wait to see.  She's been knitting lace to make this Irish linen tablecloth.  I warned her not to serve borscht when it's one the table!

 Here Jill is measuring Jaynie's piece.  We are accumulating inches to help Canadian Quilter stitch from one side of Canada to the other.

 Lydia didn't actually show this one for show-and-tell but had it out later.  I believe it's for a Triple C fundraiser.

 It's been exquisitely quilted by Terry.

Here's this year's executive:  Elaine is treasurer, Donna W. is president, and Marg is secretary.  They are in for a busy year!

 Colleen S. gathered the retreaters for some instructions.  For the second year in a row the dates don't work for me.  I'm so disappointed.  I wonder if those Torquay ladies have room in their retreat for me?

 So what's this next photo about?  Did the rest of you who attended the meeting dash down to Dollarama to buy bins to organize your UFOs?  I'm determined to get my projects organized so that I can get going on Colleen's challenge.  I'm not usually one to have UFOs but some definitely piled up in the last year.

Now if I stumble across some unfinished postcards or ATCs and get them finished, I wonder if I can negotiate a tenth of a point or something!  Truthfully I always do get those small projects finished.  I've got two sets of postcards finished for an online swap which has the theme "old technology."  I stretched the theme a bit on the newspaper hat but I couldn't resist using the cool fabric I found at Periwinkle.

Let's compost the rest of the garden stuff and get quilting!

Thoughts Turning to Quilt Guild

Ladies, have you missed me?  I've missed you and can't wait for our new year of quilt guild to start.  I always think I'll sew in the summer but instead I pick weeds, visit with friends, have relatives stay, travel, and garden, garden, garden,

 

I have had time to find four new books for the guild library.  Hopefully you will sign them out.  My thoughts are to use most of the library budget this year to find a more user-friendly way of storing the books so that you can access them more easily.  I also want to track which books are being borrowed most to try figure out if we need more books on specific topics.

 

Here are the four I bought:

 

 

 The next one looks great for those of you who have embroidery machines and for those of you who love creating art quilts.

 The following is a goldmine of stitches and designs for crazy quilts.

 The last book definitely gives new ideas for those beautiful, bold prints that you are afraid to cut into.
